Introduction

We’re huge fans of sustainable gardening on a small-scale. And we believe amazing things can be achieved within the confines of a city or busy suburb. We are committed to respecting the privacy rights of visitors to our site Trybackyardfarming.com (TBF).

We created this privacy policy to give you confidence that your personal information is safe here and to demonstrate our commitment to fair information practices.

Please note that this policy only applies to our site; embedded content and links to other sites have separate data collection use practices and policies that you’ll want to carefully read.

Basic Information We Collect

We collect personal information, your name and email address, in three situations:

  1. When you request a consultation.
  2. When you leave a comment on a blog post.
  3. When you click on the Submit button on the Contact Us form.

If You Are a Citizen of the European Union

Even when you’re traveling or living outside the EU, the 2018 General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) requires that we obtain your explicit consent before adding (or keeping you) on our mailing list. You have the right to request access to the information we have, to know how it is used, and to request its erasure from our server. We are obligated to remove all of your information from our database within one (1) month of receiving your request.

The

Information Automatically Collected

Traffic Control. Our servers automatically recognize the domain name and IP address of visitors. TBF may also gather anonymous “traffic data” which helps us know better how to direct our marketing efforts or improve the service we offer. No personal information is revealed in either of these processes.

Comments. When visitors leave a comment on our admittedly great articles or site, we collect their name and email address.

Spam Control.  We collect commenters’ IP address and browser user agent string, which is a line of text that tells the web server the name of your browser and operating system. By looking at these two pieces of information, the server can identify and reject comments from spammers.

Photos. An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. If you are, your profile picture will appear next to your comment once it is approved. (If you have questions about the Gravatar service privacy policy, check it out here: https://automattic.com/privacy/.)

Cookies

A cookie is a small piece of information about TBF that gets stored on your computer. They help us learn which areas of our website are useful and, courtesy of Google Analytics or similar products, the cookies show us where to make improvements to our site.

If you leave a comment on our site, you are given the option of saving your name, email address, and website in cookies. This is so you won’t have to enter the information each time you visit and leave a comment. Like all cookies, these go stale; after one year they’re goners.

If you don’t want cookies cluttering up your computer for any length of time, and don’t mind re-entering your information every time you visit, you can disable cookies on your browser by going to the Settings menu and clicking on the Advanced tab.

Embedded Content from Other Websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content like videos, images, articles, etc.). This content behaves exactly as you were viewing it on that other website.

That means your interaction with the embedded content could be tracked and information collected about you by that website by means of cookies and third-party tracking software.

If the embedded content is from a website that you have an account with and are logged into, that website will track your interaction with its content embedded here on TBF.

Sponsors and Advertisers

We may decide to accept sponsorship and advertisements on TBF. If so, you should assume that they will be given access to the impressions and click data (how a visitor interacts with their site) on their marketing pieces. We do not give out personally identifiable information (name, email).

How Long We Retain Your Data

Comments and their metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

Your Data Rights

If you have left a comment on this site, you can request an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Where We Send Your Data

Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service.

If required by law, we must disclose personal information if requested by a court or other legal entity. This is to not only protect our legal rights, but to protect the safety of the public or other TBF visitors.

Third-party Websites

If you follow a link from our website to another, be sure to view their privacy policy which will be different from ours.

How We Protect Your Data

We use Secure Sockets Layer, or SSL, a standard to protect information sent or gathered from you. Other standard Internet features may also be used. We will only work with third-party vendors with solid reputations.

We ask that you please not send personal information by email on in our comments section. Email is not considered a safe place for sensitive information!
